The locomotive is built on a solid, reliable chassis by Bachmann, one of the world's largest manufacturers of model trains. Like all the trains on this page, this is an accurate scale model of a real-world 2-6-0 Mogul-type locomotive that was manufactured by the Baldwin Locomotive Company in the late 1800s. For over half a century, in all parts of the USA, these small-but-mighty locomotives hauled freight and passenger trains on "narrow gauge" lines that went places where bigger, "standard gauge" trains couldn't go.

On Hawthorne Village model locomotives, the plastic parts have been carefully detailed and painted by hand. Thewheels and moving parts are all metal, as are many of the details. The quality and value are evident as soon as you open the box. Subsequent issues in this collection each come with a hand-painted car that equals the quality of this issue. As different as they may look, all of the trains on this page are mechanically interchangeable. They are On30 trains, built on frames made by the Bachmann Corporation, the world's largest model train manufacturer. The track they all use is the same EZ-Track that Bachmann sells for HO trains, so if you order more than one Hawthorne Village train, you can use the track from each set interchangeably. You can also always get extra Bachmann EZ-Track pieces as well as Bachmann parts and service on your Hawthorne Village trains. Here's a personal note: You can imagine that I've seen and owned my share of model trains and structures. But I was frankly surprised at the quality of these issues when I received them. I unpacked the first issue of the village and the train at the same time, and the very first thing I did was mix up the pieces. I think the Jack Skellington figurine came with the house and his ghost dog came with the train, but the pieces all went very well together as you can see. My 16-year old figured out that the dog was supposed to snap on the locomotive's headlight the first second she saw it; go figure.
