Candy Mold Ideas

Note: This is actually the start of an article that I haven't finished yet. However, I've posted it because it has some useful photographs and ideas. If you have tried this or something like it, please let me know, and I'll add anything you have (especially photos) to this page. Thanks - Paul

The next time you're near a place that sells candy-making supplies, check out those flexible plastic molds people make "homemade candies" with. You know, the kind that transforms "coating chocolate" into mints, candy eggs, chocolate rabbits, and suckers?

Among those molds, you may find molds for manufacturing diminutive chocolate houses in something like O or S scale (1:45-1:64).
Though the structures are too small to use on our 1:32 or larger garden railroads, as this closeup shows, the tiles and shingles on the roofs of those molds are oversized. So for only a few dollars you can get a nice mold for a tile or shingled shed roof.
I recently picked up this mold with a "slate" roof for $1 from a local craft supplier that was going out of business. The roof is only five inches long, but will make a nice shed roof.
There's even an outhouse that may be suitable for Standard Gauge users. (If your figures are much over 3" tall they may not fit through the door.)

I wouldn't recommend using coating chocolate as a permanent structural material to be used outside, but I would consider experimenting with anchoring cement. Spray the mold first with PAM or something similar, and pop the roof out soon after it sets up, to make certain it doesn't bond permanently to your mold and turn it into a one-use product.

If you don't mind paying more for shipping than you do for the molds, you can find these on the Web. Two places that have a selection are:

Both want substantially more to ship the molds than the molds cost. But at least you can see thumbnails of what is available. Examples you might check out are included in the following list.
  • 3D Outhouse Candy Mold (MLD13630) - This makes a 2 1/4 inch by 2 1/4 inch by 4 3/8 inch tall outhouse. (I've actually seen two outhouse molds, and I'm not sure which is the largest.)
  • X Large 3D House Candy Mold (MLD13640) - Includes a pattern you could use to mold useful roof material.
  • 3D Dog House Candy Mold (MLDAO1437) - May be big enough for a Large Scale dog house
  • Brick Church assembly mold (CK907301) - May include useful roofing material mold
  • Barn assembly chocolate mold (CMM054) - May include useful roofing material mold

Anyone else have any tips they'd like to share in this space?

Thanks, and best of luck, all,

Paul
