Attack of the Giant Calico

The photo above shows Little Sam, the granddaughter of a calico my youngest named Sam before she was old enough to really realize the difference between boy cats and girl cats. Little Sam used to accompany me to the garden periodically to provide moral support when I had to lay down to blow the grit out of my switch mechanisms or whatever.

Unfortunately, Little Sam disappeared about six months after this picture was taken, which made me glad I took it.

Cats have always been around the railroad; now between our neighbor and ourselves we may have up to 5 cats patrolling the back yard at any given time. I wish they would take better care of the moles, but the cats haven't caused any damage to the railroad, which is way more than I can say for the raccoons.

The cats like to walk the raised portion of the right-of-way, and sometimes sleep right on the tracks when the sun has warmed the gravel. Some have stalked or chased moving trains as well, though we've yet to have one knock the train off the track.
